Welcome Back!!!
This nine week has been the education of new information in leadership and strategic communication. Throughout these nine weeks we've learned about leadership, digital communication, listening, internal, and external communication, etc. We've learned how social media can have an impact on organizations and they're affected by the information. The power of knowledge can be very beneficial and uplifting when learning how to focus on being a great leader. Each blog post gave a better understanding on how to better utilize our communication skills whether in the work world or society. Many of us probably thought that we didn't need any help on improving upon the necessary skills but over the nine-week period I've seen room for improvement. One of my favorite post for these past few weeks was about "Leadership Brings Success" and how true this has been for centuries. Therefore take the steps to become a successful leader in your organization or community.
The title of this post is "Gone too Soon" and the reason for the title is due to the fact that this will be my last post for this week and there is more information out there that can be shared. Since I want to be with you from this point moving forward, I hope this information given may improve your outlook on leadership and strategic communication. This blog will still be online if anyone needs to go back over the weeks for a refresher course. Strategic Communication Professionals Impact
Welcome Back!!
This week has been real challenging in learning all the information that was provided in order to gain some power of knowledge. Strategic communication is a part of our everyday lives whether we knowledge it or not, talking to friends about a trip, making decisions at work, or playing some type of sport. Information can be gathered or hand through the technology that seems to be taking over society. This post will be a continuum of information from previous informative articles that have been uploading information to the cerebral cortex of the brain.
There were some interesting readings along with someTedtalk videos for the week. All the information talked about ways to communicate and even non-verbal which was very interesting. How can communication be effective on impacting how we relay information? The focus on strategic communication campaign impact through social media, the internet, and other digital media outlets have been the topic involving leadership. Gathering information has been very important in finding out how successful an organization has been or will be in the future. Strategic communication professionals are an important part of leadership in businesses that must maintain teamwork in order to be successful under the new technology that continues to grow daily.
During the holidays we tend to eat as much food as we can, save some for later and continue to eat for another day. Whenever I'm during a holiday I strategize on how much food will I need on my plate or whether I need another one to make another portion. When will utilize a food strategy like the example that was given, think about how information is gathered on a strategical level and how much information can be absorbed? Tedtalk JP Rangaswami (2012) indicated "that food and information can be similar in some form of shape." Strategic communication professionals need information to make sure the organization is utilizing what the company is about and how good the product or service has been to consumers. Just like food, there will be some bad information and some good information, but at the end of the day, individuals have to decide on taking the good or bad outcomes. According to Ted talk JP Rangaswami (2012), information is never a food overload, fundamentally it's a consumption issue and we have to find to create diets within ourselves and deal with the information and responsibly. It seems that organizations can handle the diet of information responsibly as dieting for exercise to accomplish goals.
Strategic communication professionals in leadership will promote campaigns to see how the impact of social media, traditional media, the internet, and blogs will shape the organization. Having a strong message can go far if it is focusing on the mission statements of the company to promote growth. Keller and Miller (2006) indicated "according to D.K. Wright(2001), the internet offers the potential for unlimited message dissemination within and by the public relations profession. In addition to unlimited delivery, the internet represents a "paradigmatic shift in corporate communications, creating the opportunity for fully two-way communications between organizations and their publics" (Wright, 2001, p.5)." The delivery of a message from social media can be beneficial in understanding what consumers may think of the business. We know today that millennials are very outspoken when it comes to an organization or the message being presented. Social media can determine if an organization communication message has been effective because the Generation Nexters will definitely let the business know how they feel by purchasing or not purchasing a product.
Gathering data from the internet is a way to understand the impact of a campaign. Strategic communication professionals have companies such as google monitor the traffic coming to their websites. Outcomes play an important role when it comes to impacting a campaign. Whatever leadership puts out that what you will get, it's just like ROI(Return On Investment) in the financial markets. Evaluating the data from internet traffic can help determine a campaign. According to Atkins and Rice (2013), evaluation improves the probability of achieving program success by forcing campaign for programmers explicitly in advance the goals and objectives of the campaign and the theoretical or casual relations leading to those expectations (p.84)." Strategic communication professionals see the number of people clicking on ads and browsing through their organizations' site. Measuring the impact of the campaign comes from how much information is being put out into society and getting feedback from the individuals who took the campaign content and purchased a product or service.
This information has become beneficial in a better understanding of strategic communication and the professionals that work in this field. Communication works in different ways such as verbal or body language. Each week has been something different that many individuals can utilize within their organization or business. The power of knowledge can have its place within our society on a daily basis and it's up to us to take advantage of the information given. This week has been very challenging with so much to learn and implement within this course. Overall gratification is something that keeps me going and providing what I have learned is special. This post gave examples that corresponded well with strategic communication and what leadership has to achieve when dealing with data. The internet is the source were companies improve upon what is lacking in enticing new consumers. If this post can be helpful, then I hope you as the reader will take this post and share it with family and friends. Giving feedback for this post can help me as well, and comments will show how communication works from both parties.
Join me next week for the last and final post of this nine week period and I hope you all have enjoyed learning about strategic communication and leadership.

Leaders in crisis management
Welcome Back!!!
Are there any set of rules or ways to handle a crisis communication that may affect effective society, organizations, and government entities. There is no set ways to handle a crisis and having the understanding and preparation to face one can be challenging. Society seems to always have a crisis when leadership steps in to fix the problem or attempt to fix the issue. In today's world, leaders in strategic communication have to continue to evolve to keep up with the technological changes that are growing in the social media world. Social media tends to be the heart and soul of the Millennial generation when it comes to freedom of speech and expression. This topic will shed some light on how leaders in crisis management can focus on problems that may persist in our society, and over the years there have been enough. Finding a better understanding of how strategic communication works when dealing with negative messages exploding on social or traditional media is when a leader will look at present mistakes in order to prevent future ones and this blog will enhance a fundamental clarification.
What is crisis management? The meaning is very simple; the ability to handle a disaster whether natural, an organization, government, or business that may create a problem for individuals or entities affected by the results. On a daily basis, we can see or hear some type of crisis on the television, newspapers, or the car radio that goes in detail about a companies situation. James and Wooten (2008) indicated "these organizational crises includes events such as natural disasters, product recalls, corporate fraud, widespread sexual harassment, or employee discrimination against employees." Not just only these type of crisis mass shootings, police shootings, and violent protest. Leaders must have a strategic communication plan in place to deal with any fall backs that may occur through from unknowing or knowing incidents. As we learn previously every leader must have a vision that will benefit all parties involved. Leaders in crisis management must have meetings with their team and keep stakeholders up-to-date on the decision-making process.
Let's take a look at the 2012 South Carolina data compromised that consisted of 3.6 million social security numbers and 387,000 debit cards numbers being stolen. This type of criminal activity could have jeopardized a lot of people financial security and future because of foreign predators. Leaders within South Carolina should've been more cautious in monitoring Social Security numbers, and the Gov. Haley had to take the blame because of her position. The leader's strategic strategy was to come together with law enforcement to come up with solutions and handle the situation. This type of action involve the internal communication and then the external communication in letting citizens know of the breach and what actions needed to be taken. Since I am a South Carolina resident, I had to continue monitoring my credit to make sure nothing was put on there without my permission. The leaders provided everyone with a free year subscription of credit monitoring and theft protection to help the citizens.
The example of the South Carolina data breach shows how one must always be prepared for a crisis management. The social media help relay information to the people that had no idea of the incident of stolen social security numbers and once the information got out it went downhill from there. The leadership had to put out information involving a strategic plan to help alleviate the citizens fear of information being utilized. Having a strategic policy in place became more of a priority for government leadership in hopes of prevention and better communication for this type of crisis. Once leaders in crisis management begin to understand the severity of a situation without being pressured from society, then major issues can be minimized. We must realize that leadership and development are at the forefront of any crisis.
Leaders must have 1) vision, 2) investigation, 3) plan to handle internal and external communication, and 4) fix the problem as I have learned in previous jobs about crisis management. Leaders should always be attentive and ready for anything. Once information gets on social media, then it's everywhere, and a majority of the people will see what information is being posted by a few individuals. Now with social media it's like rolling rocks on a mountain, once one falls others will follow. Leaders should always put out the correct information to eliminate any confusion that may persist or will persist. Never leave individuals to continue using social media friends as a source of information. All crisis may not get handled according to or effectively but as a leader making an attempt is crucial in showing concern. Communication is the key when managing a crisis and collaborating with a team of individuals to focus on strategic communication is critical. Every leader needs a team and motivation skills to have every member on the same page.
This post and topic for this week hit home due to myself being involved in such a crisis in South Carolina that consisted of social security numbers being stolen. The information established in this post can be beneficial as a leader involving a crisis management. Gaining the power of knowledge every week can influence and help others to become better leaders whether in the community, government, or any business. As a leader, one must never give up finding solutions to a problem and always work on turning a negative into a positive. During these few weeks, the information presented has been beneficial to me when learning about things that I thought I knew and I hope this information helps you in your work world when dealing crisis management.
Look forward to next week and continue to post information on strategic communication and leadership. Hope you enjoyed this knowledge.

Utilizing Ads to Get A Message Across.
Welcome Back!!!
Welcome again to another week of Leadership and Media Strategies in communications that focus on the Power of Knowledge. Having knowledge will allow for growth that will expand your mindset and offer others pertinent information that can have an enduring effect. Over the past several week's leadership and communication had become a part of our everyday lives and change what we thought we knew but we didn't know. Let us see what information this will take us to another level in an organization.
In today's society, messages can come from any source or any direction to make people listen and see what a business can offer or any organization. The most effective way to get a message across has been advertising through media or online. Many businesses are starting to utilize Google as a viable source of making sure people are noticing their product or services. Google seems to have more traffic than other websites, and that has become the focus for gaining exposure. The Chief of Google indicated that in 2012 that 50 percent of ads will go online in the next five years, which seem to come true. Every time you click on something online, what do you see popping up? Ads are popping up so much that it can get overwhelming at times. Some of the ads may come from businesses that you are currently using or have no interest in utilizing. Googles SVP Nikesh Arora (2013) indicated "there's currently about $800 billion in global advertising market". Online advertising isn't quite up to that level of earnings yet.
Around this time of year, money seems to blow in the wind like dust in a field. The holiday spending curse that allows content to be distributed through media continually and online to get the message across. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the busiest holidays when it comes to shopping, and there is no other better time to flood the every outlet such as radios, media, traditional tv commercials, and online advertising. Avoiding these type of advertising can be tough when trying to spend money. When I'm online browsing the World Wide Web through Google, online ads are coming from each direction of the monitor even when you enable pop-up blocks. When the ads are popping up, they're getting the attention of many consumers which indicates the message is be heard by the number of clicks.
Traditional ads are somewhat effective during the holidays, but the online ads are continuously flooding the internet. Holiday ad message content goes in-depth on the prices of product, limits on products, and the store hours, and some ask for consumers to download apps. The problem that may happen with online ads has the necessary phone coverage when out shopping to view, which can be a hassle. The message has already been implemented in a person mind and going to a store hearing an employee say they don't have the product can be a problem. The online ads have imprinted the message in the brain, and you're determined to get satisfaction. Let's remember that holiday shopping is tough and having an idea of what you want before dealing with traffic and the crowds is paramount.
What is the message? The message is to gain as much exposure to an audience that will listen and go out and spend the money on a product or service. Communication plays a significant role in ads and Reese and Shoemaker (1996) reported a framework: 1) who(communicator), 2) says what through which channel(media channel), 3) to whom(audience), 4) with what effect(effects). Each one of these frameworks is used every day whether we know it or not and this information can help all to understand what we as a society never realized. Think about this framework when looking at your organization.
The audiences are the consumers and the leaders of the organizations utilize the strategic communication strategies in the real world when it came to relaying a message. A Tedtalk video from Morgan Spurlock talks about trying to get the information out by networking and targeting the big time companies that will have an influence on the consumers. Morgan Spurlock (Ted talk) states "when you train your employees to be risk adverse; then you're preparing your whole company to be reward challenged." This statement relates in a way that businesses should have the right people in place to get a good message out. When the ads are launch online, a huge margin of profit should continue to grow. If organizations aren't utilizing ads then how will people know what a company as to offer? Ads are one of the best ways to get people involved to have happy holiday shopping.
This week's topic focuses on utilizing ads to get a message across when trying to persuade people to purchase a product or service. Online ads and traditional ads have and will continue to be effect in our society and on the flipside, online ads will continue to flood our online searches. Google will become a forefront barrier versus the other sites sooner, rather than later. Messages from ads can be very effective when leaders in strategic communication promote an agenda. With this information, we can see why ads are being pushed online do the nature of the web searching growth. Hope that you enjoyed this weeks article and continued to follow me next week on some more vital information.
Looking forward to providing knowledge next week!!

Leadership Brings Success
Welcome Back!!!
Welcome again to the power of knowledge surrounding leadership and media strategies. This week's article will focus on leadership and how it distinguishes from management. Many may think that leadership is the same as management and you aren't alone. The two can be confusing sometimes, but the skills sets are different. Some people are natural leaders, while others have to learn the skills to become a part of leadership. Leadership is in every organization whether it's in the government, non-profit, or corporate world and having people on the same page are what leaders can accomplish. If you are still having doubts about leadership not being management, stay with along this ride, and it will certainly become clearer as the information is being put forth.
Leadership is not management, and the differences can easily be shown. Management deals with the ability to produce a product and service without a need to build a relationship with their employees. Kotter (2013) stated, "management is a set of well-known processes, like budgeting, planning, structuring jobs, staffing jobs, measuring performance, and problem-solving, which help an organization to do what it knows how to do well predictably." Have you ever wonder why an employee doesn't have a relationship with management, this evidence shows what the job description entitles. Management focuses on getting job task complete and handle the difficult task that may follow. Imagine yourself going to a car dealership, and you're talking to a salesperson, and they get up to go to another cubical which is the manager's office, the salesperson comes back to you and indicates that the manager signed off on the sale. Management did their job in making sure the service was being handled properly.
Now let us take a look at leadership that is totally different from management. Leadership leads to create an understanding between both parties being present. Some traits that a leader possess are as follows: 1)has a vision, purpose, and direction, 2) technical/administrative, 3) thinking skills, 4) drive and motivation, 5) trust and respect, 6) teamwork and collaboration, 7) empowerment, and 8) coach, praise, and give feedback. If you consider yourself a leader do you possess the necessary skills that are mention, ask yourself that question. Many may say, but in reality, the truth sometimes will show you the light and changes will be needed on your behalf. Kotter (2013) stated, "Leadership is not about attributes, it's about behavior." This statement is so true when it comes down to being a leader whether in past, present, or future tense.
During my tenure as a youth football coach, my task in a position of leadership resembled some of these traits and when dealing with 7, 8, 9, and ten years, your behavior has to be on point. Trying to get young kids to see your vision in that no matter what the final score is, they're all still winners. Respect, trust, and empowering others will take you to another level in life. Once people can enhance their leadership in strategic communication, then things will become so easy when dealing people. Making sure that good examples are being set and giving people a chance to add to the information that can be beneficial to what's trying to accomplished. Have you heard the saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink" which is very much true, in other words, you can lead a person, but it's up to the individual if they want to reap the rewards being presented?
Both of leadership and management is vital to an organization both have different agendas. Being a leader in strategic communication works when information is being provided, in a way that's clearly explained. Once the individual gets people to believe in the shared ideas or even come together on a mission is when leadership has succeeded. Leadership can communicate in a variety of ways such as; staff meetings, emails, or even phone calls that will allow participation from all parties. Leadership helps the organization to run smooth which allows management to do their job involving the business structure. After reading a few articles on leaders in strategic communication and what it takes to be a leader has clarified a lot of information on what it takes to be a leader. Once you start to find out that your leadership skills aren't what you think they are, then you will understand.
Many successful leaders had visions, such as Martin Luther King Jr., President Barack Obama, Senator Bernie Sanders, General George Patton, and Nelson Mandela to name a few. To understand leadership that brings success, look at these list of individuals from the past to present. Each one had a vision, inspired, and motivated people to believe in what they were trying to accomplish. It takes dedication, time, and hard work to be in a leadership position. Leaders will never have to management anyone but build a relationship that promotes positive behavior equalling positive results.
Leaders should have the ability to strategically communicate as I am learning through this class that has given a better understanding of leadership. Employers are highly seeking individuals with excellent leadership skills for their organization. Utilize this skill set to grow and enhance opportunities that may be present or in the near future. I hope this power of knowledge of leadership has been very helpful and many of you will be able to incorporate this information into your daily lives. Hope you will continue to enjoy this blog along with the information presented on a weekly basis.

Leadership and Internal Communication
Welcome Back to Knowledge!!
Welcome to the fourth post for this nine-week period, and it continues to be interesting in understanding strategic communication that may have an impact on our daily lives. Communication and listening are something that we do whether we know it not. In every organization, there is a leader that have the skills to be an effective communicator, and then there are leaders that aren't good communicators that will listen. Sometimes people should learn how to be a leader that can listen and have good internal communication with individuals or employees. This week's post will focus on leadership and internal communication and the ability to listen.
After reading a few articles about leadership and internal communication, this information will give you a better understanding of how organizations operation. A leader with experience can provide internal communication by memos, emails, and policies and procedures that will give employees a grip on how top levels can communicate. Dr. Kline stated that a leader should encourage feedback, listen effectively, and reduce communication misunderstanding. These ideas are ways to break down many barriers that may present itself. Internal communication in an organization is the lifeline that keeps providing the necessary information for individuals.
When I look at a leader and the internal communication aspect of this blog, this leads back to when I was coaching youth football a few years. The coaches and I as leaders had to communicate with each other through meetings and phone calls in order clarify a misunderstanding for an upcoming game. Each coach had to listen effectively to make sure everyone was on the same page. It doesn’t matter what your occupation, organization, or activity, leaders are needed to make things function. Dr. Kline also indicates “responsible leaders work hard to prevent bottlenecks and keep channels open up, down, and throughout the organization by (1) establishing an appropriate working climate and adjusting their communication behavior to fit the situation and (2) practicing techniques to improve communication in their organization”. Being able to bring about a change in others behavior is something that many would like to accomplish, and sometimes you might not get through to a lot of people, but putting forth the effort is what makes a great leader.
Whether a person may know it or not, internal communication is provided daily, when utilizing Facebook, emails, and Instagram to send a private message to reach an individual or group of people. Sounds familiar now once you think about it, never thought about internal communication. Good internal communication can:
- Provide people the information they need to do their jobs effectively
- Make sure they know about anything that concerns them
- Provide people with clear standards and expectations for their work
- Give people feedback on their performance
- Provide them emotional support for difficult work
- Suggest new ideas about both their work and their lives
- Allow them to take the pulse of the organization and understand its overall situation
- Help them maintain a shared vision and a sense of ownership in the organization
Listening and communication should never be one-sided and all parties should be involved and once an understanding is a reached, then the effectiveness of an organization will prosper. When you think about communicating, it can be verbal or non-verbal, but at the end of the day, they both can relay a good or bad message. It’s up to the leader to make sure everyone is always informed to avoid any negative outlook that displays a fracture within an organization.
Just imagine when if you never check your email or never listen in staff meetings at your job that indicated all staff would be able to come in two hours late for work. Everyone else got the memo through listening at the staff meeting and checking their emails, but you were in a zone by not paying attention, then the next day you came into work while you normally do. Then you realize that you’re the only one there, looking around going to the supervisor and asking where is everyone, then your supervisor asked, weren’t you in the meeting or check your email? He states that the department heads gave him permission to let everyone come in two hours late, then you finally realize that you weren’t paying attention or checking emails. The moral of the story is, the leader did his job by utilizing internal communication to inform his employees of the schedule change. Providing information is what a good leader will do when taking more than one step to remind people of what staff meetings are.
Every week as I expound on media and leadership strategies with knowledge that you may haven’t know before can be very useful in our everyday lives, as I have excepted the information along with you. Leaders and communication go hand in hand and to provide success within an organization you will need both to survive. No matter how much a person may think they know, there will always be something that will humble you in that aspect. Never be afraid to ask for feedback or needing help to solve a problem, a leader’s position is also to advise and to make sure the climate is right for an individual setting. Once a leader promotes internal communication the openness and flow of communication will flow smooth like a river.
If you want to continue expanding your knowledge on media and leadership strategies, then I look forward to you coming back next week and searching for more great knowledge that will change your thought process. Maybe this information can be helpful when trying to communicate within your organization or provide other leaders with better ways to listen and properly use the power of internal communication.

Listening as a Communication Tool
Welcome Back to Knowledge!!
I'm Back!!! Time can fly right past us if we don't pay attention. Welcome to the third week of my blog post, and you may find some interesting things that you may or may not have known. We as people have a tendency to focus and hear things that we want to hear, and some may call it selective hearing. The focus of this piece will be on strategic communication listening skills to help improve communication that may have an effect on your decision-making process. We're living in a technological, social media society that people are adapting to, such as the laggards and we already know that the Millennium are always ahead. So the blog will focus on how we listen and the effects involving communication. When one can accept and understand what we've been missing, effective listening skills will guide you in the right direction. Lets begin.

To give some insight on how significant listening skills are, let us take a look at the pie chart above. Compared to reading, writing, and speaking, listening accounts for 72 percent of communication. Without the ability to listen, then the other subject can't exist. How can a person become an effective listener when engaging in a conversation with others or from the social media or in an organization? To become a better listener, one must take the time to become one. New information on becoming an effective leader came from Dr. Kline, who wrote a book called "Listen Effectively" and upon my reading, I was amazed on somethings that I didn't know. My mindset was that I have no problems with listening and boy was I wrong. During my research of knowledge in Leadership and media strategies class topic, we've discussed how communication strategies professionals can use listening skills to help communicate internal, external, and government environments. Each one of these environments represents the lack of listening skills of a person.
As we look at how people communicate in today's world can be very puzzling because of technology. People need to understand that listening can take you a long way, for example, when you were younger, and your mom told you not to touch the hot stove because it will burn you, what did you do, touched it without hesitation. The listening was there but not understanding. Dr. Kline (1996) stated, "among the great hindrances to effective listening are the fallacies that people hold about listening." So people will automatically assume that they have no issues when it comes to listening. We can all agree that listening wasn't a subject in school and we had to learn the hard way, especially when it came to testing, classwork, and homework assignments. I can honestly say that I fell into this category, especially during my undergraduate years during class lectures and seminars. There weren't too many days that I listen or had to ask other classmates later about what assignments and study notes. Still to this day I sometimes don't listen, but after reading Dr. Kline's book, now I understand the what it means to be an effective listener. The process comes in five steps 1) receiving, 2) attending, 3) understanding, 4) responding, and 5) remembering. If you want to understand more about yourself, take a look at the book entitled "Listening Effectively" by Dr. John A. Kline.
The Digital Generation has found the social media sites to be there the new form of listening when trying to communicate with another person. It seems to be a way to avoid someone by not having a face-to-face conversation and when I mean avoidance, take a look at the cellphones, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, etc. The social media sites for communication seems to work for the Millennials, but at the same time, the message and understanding can get lost as well. While working with juveniles as a youth counselor, I've used the listen to five step process in teaching kids how to become effective listeners and didn't realize it until now.
Effective listening can also be understood by the use of viral videos when communicating. These videos can be used in organizations to promote listening skills training and promoting products. When viral videos go viral as I've learned in this week's discussion and Tedtalks, sums up how products and service can play a major role in our society. When the "hear me now" commercial came out, many people listened and trusted what is told about a product. This type of strategic communication got the attention of millions and made them listen, which allowed for Dr. Kline's five step listening process to take effect. Even though social media has taken off to the point that technology must continue to advance, we must continue to listen effectively not just by viral videos and technology.
One thing to remember is that listening and hearing are not the same. The hearing is the reception of sound; listening is the attachment of the meaning. So when you have to go for a job interview, you should be giving your undivided attention to the speaker, looking that person in the eye, correct posture, and understanding the information being giving to give positive feedback. All the information that is being provided within this blog can be beneficial in learning a lot about yourself when it comes to listening skills. Effective listening is something that can be learned by educating yourself and learning to eliminate barriers that persist in your mind. After being brought down to reality in thinking that my listening skills are top notch, now I'm back into the education stage in making sure that I have the necessary tools to become more effective when communicating with people. I hope that this information will change your way of thinking as it has changed mind.
Looking forward to providing information that can be powerful in everyday lifestyle, so join me again next week for a new post! Thanks for reading.

Opinion Leaders and Social Media at its Best.
Welcome Back to another week of the power of knowledge!!
This week's topic for leadership and media strategies is a fascinating one in that many probably never thought to exist. Opinion leaders and Social media at its best. Social media has been the new vision of new age technology that has evolve and will continue to evolve. The influence that it has over our daily lives has been evident on a daily basis within the entertainment industry. I have been trying to catch up with the modern technology to advance my knowledge of products and services. Over the last ten years, I never expected the social media to be as influential as it has and continue to be.
As new products and services continue to evolve, the opinion leaders are making an impact on what people are purchasing. If you don't know what an opinion leader is, then I will put some light on the meaning as I have found out recently as well. Opinion leaders are individuals that are innovators of new products, ideas and gives advice and information to individuals before purchasing. This is something that in a million years that I would've never thought about until class readings. You may ask the question how can this be? Reflect on this, products and services are being presented on Social Media daily such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, and Instagram, we all can agree! Opinion leaders are the ones that give insight on whether they had a good or bad experience with a product. These innovators will make you want to try the product or service, and the Millennials are at the forefront of commercializing. Strong opinion leaders will help promote a product by having people expand on their ideas and this in return leads to people spreading the information by word-of-mouth.
Over the years I have been slowly adapting to the diffusion of innovation that is carried out by the marketing of the Digital generation. It took me awhile to get on Facebook after Myspace ended and now the younger generations are trying to convince me to get on Twitter and Instagram by telling me the benefits of other social media sites. I am still in the laggard mindset that hates to adapt to change even though I am a part of the Generation Nexters. For many years I have been counseling youth and have learned a lot about the new trends that are going on. They know almost everything about technology and when I ask them the question; how do you all know this? The response they give to me is because they found out from social media and the celebrities have told them. So, with myself not being on all the social media sites, I wouldn't know what is going on in the social media world. Now that I see how opinion leaders can influence a generation, after the readings that I have invested my time in acquiring the knowledge. Even my nephew has the opinion leadership tools as he communicates with his friends on a daily basis about products and I have been amazed by his knowledge of products.
Social media is similar to news outlets that produce stories that people are interested in knowing what is going on in today's society. With that in mind opinion leaders do the same but promote real life experiences to the public. All this power of knowledge can be beneficial when understanding the importance of technology, whether in a traditional or social setting. Look at how times have changed from the 90's until today; newspapers and TV commercials did everything in promoting a product or service. Now the visualization of stories are being utilized, for example when trying to purchase a car; Blake Griffin promotes the Kia automobile on TV commercials and Instagram. Singers, rappers, and entertainers are great opinion leaders because of their influence and the fan base that ranges into the hundreds of thousand of followers.
The desire to be the first of many to try something new is what drives the millenniums, instead of waiting two weeks for prices to drop on products and finding out what issues that may persist, they still want to be one of the first to post a pic on social media. We must not forget that all stories from opinion leaders aren't always positive stories and the powerful ones can destroy a product or service produced by a company. After viewing the Ted talk video from http://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html, it gives a clear understanding of the why and what. Take your time to view this video and see what I amazed to learn. Knowledge is power and having the knowledge can be lethal in becoming a reliable source.
Whenever you sit back and think about your first known product for purchase, did you take the advice of a person in making a purchase? If so, from what media site in this new technological world did you get advice and did you follow the recommendation? If you answered yes to the following questions and took the advice from a person from a social media site, then you've encountered an opinion leader, and the advice was to your liking.
Overall, as you clearly see, our decision-making process can influence people that have the ability to change your mindset. How many followers they may have to solidify their expertise? Once the mind becomes focused on getting something that is wanted, we will take all the necessary steps to be a part of the purchasing group. Maybe one day I and others will utilize all of the social media sites and try to be more open instead of being limited. This information has been very informative as a power of knowledge in a learning capacity that will allow me to communicate with others for the next few weeks and beyond.
Continue to support my blog, as every week will relay information that may be useful in your everyday living scenario; whether at work, or social settings as you gather with friends. Stay tuned for the next several weeks will expand your horizon as the knowledge of media strategies continue to grow.

My name is Olando Quick, and this course is a part of my continuous journey as a graduate student at Troy University majoring in Public Administration. I have an undergraduate Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Morris College(HBCU), and a Dual Masters in Human Resources Development and Management and Leadership from Webster University. Even though this course isn't a part of my program, but I feel this Leadership and Media Strategies will help me elevate my communication strategies to become a better Public Servant. I have also worked in the Public Service field for about ten years that has allowed me to deal with a diverse group of people. My joy in the Public Service comes from helping today's youth to grow and become productive citizens inti adulthood. My interest is writing poetry, working out, spreading knowledge, sports, movies, and meeting new people.
I have previously written a blog from my previous course, which is entitled oquick.blogspot.com that I feel has excellent information. This blog will be providing information on a weekly basis on topics relating to communication surrounding leadership and media strategies. My goal is to bring knowledge through the emergence of media and communication within our society. So join me in spreading the word of the interesting information that will be provided from my blog at http://feedingknowledge.blogspot.com.
Today's blog post will focus on the power of knowledge that relates to the Diffusion of Innovation which is percieved as the idea, behavior, or objects that are seen as new by a group of people as describe by Everett Rodgers. Innovation has become an ever-changing movement within our society. While growing up into adult technology wasn't as prevalent as today. Over time technology has become the new communication method that seems to be factual when you walk down a street, in businesses, and sometimes while driving. These are some of the new communication channels that are being implemented today compared to older years when innovation was just a thought. The Innovation of Diffusion process involves five steps: (1) knowledge, (2) persuasion, (3) decision, (4) implementation, and (5) confirmation to give you an idea of how products become available.
Let us take a look at the Android phone Samsung Galaxy product that has become popular throughout the years. At one time back in the 90's and early 2000's the Nokia phone was very popular but over time the innovation of the new idea has evolved and has caught the eye of many people through the media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The companies have to capture the minds of the Echo Boomer to purchase its product while competing with its competitors. For example; the Samsung Galaxy 3 had some issues with the battery life of involving the Android phone. For the individual's, that love the Galaxies; the company had to acknowledge the problem especially when I was one of the customers having the issue. So when the Galaxy 4 came out, Samsung seem to use Rodger five steps of Diffusion Innovation to capture the minds of the Millenniums that are the foundation of testing new products that are being produced.
The power of knowledge involving communication for media strategies is imperative to bring a new culture that uses the media to gain their knowledge when deciding on what innovated product they will use to communicate next with people. This beginning blog post is just a sample that will bring you new information that will transform your mindset when it comes to leadership and media strategies involving innovation. It's amazing how society has no idea how strategies work when it comes producing new products, but I will be one of many to provide the knowledge with this blog within the coming weeks.
Looking forward to getting your feedback and I hope you enjoy this blog.
